Weed Vaporizers: What You Should Know
July 27, 2020

Vaporizing, or vaping, cannabis is a smokeless process that involves heating dry flower or concentrate without burning them. Vape pens are popular due to their easy and discreet use, their small size (perfect for fitting in your pocket), and rapid onset time.

What Are Vaporizers

The process of vaping cannabis involves heating flower or concentrates to a temperature that turns the active compounds (cannabinoids and terpenes) into vapor. Vaporization may offer a healthier alternative to smoking as it occurs at temperatures that do not allow the flower to combust, which releases harmful tar and carcinogens, although long-term studies of vaping cannabis are still needed.

Types of Vaporizers

There are many options of vaporizers available: from tabletop vaporizers to portable flower vaporizers to vape pens. They fall under two main categories: dry-herb vaporizers and concentrate vaporizers.

Table-Top Vaporizers

Tabletop vaporizers are large, stationary temperature control units that require a solid surface upon which to sit, as well as a plug-in. Tabletop vaporizers usually come with a hose-like mouthpiece that allows the vapor to move directly from the heating chamber to the person using the vaporizer.

These stationary vapes are excellent options for patients who generally medicate at home.

Portable Flower Vaporizers

Unlike tabletop vaporizers, portable vaporizers are small and discrete, and because they are run on a battery, they are perfect for portable use. Portable vaporizers include a chamber to hold the cannabis flower or concentrate, a heating element and a battery. Once the battery is activated, the element heats up and vaporizes the flower or concentrate contained within the chamber, sending it into the mouthpiece for inhalation.

Portable Oil Vaporizers

Portable oil vaporizers, or vape pens, are designed specifically to vaporize cannabis distillates and oils.  A vape pen consists of two pieces: a battery and cartridge.

Some vape pens don’t require loading or unloading product – it all comes neatly contained in a sealed oil cylinder. However, others can be filled with your own cannabis oil. Be careful when shopping for cannabis oil, as some ingredients used can be safer than others.
