How to Make Cannabutter
November 18, 2021

At the heart of some of your favorite baked good edibles is cannabutter. Cannabis edibles made using cannabutter have a long and storied history, but this isn’t a food blog, so let’s skip the story and get right to the recipe!

Cannabutter

making cannabutterIngredients

1 cup – Butter
1 cup – Water
7 grams – Cannabis flower

Equipment

Non-stick baking tray
Parchment paper
Herb grinder
Saucepan
Jar for storage
Funnel
Cheesecloth
Suggested: Kitchen thermometer

Directions

Decarboxylation (heating the cannabis to activate cannabinoids):

Preheat oven to 245° F. Line non-stick baking tray with parchment paper. Place cannabis in an even layer on tray and bake for 30-40 minutes. Lightly shake the tray every 10 minutes to evenly bake the cannabis. Once baked, grind the cannabis coarsely with a hand grinder. This should yield about 1 cup of decarboxylated ground cannabis flower.

Butter Infusing:

In saucepan over low heat (160° F – 200° F), combine water and butter and simmer until butter melts.
Add coarsely ground cannabis to melted butter.
Simmer on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and allow to cool so it’s a safe temperature for pouring.
Cover storage jar with cheesecloth. Pour cooled cannabutter through funnel over cheesecloth into jar.
Refrigerate jar of cannabutter. After an hour, remove any excess water that may accumulate.

Dosing:

Dose carefully with ¼ or ½ teaspoon on a snack. Wait 1-3 hours after ingestion to determine how the dose affects you.

Calculating Edibles Dosages

There are formulas and calculators for determining the potency of a batch of cannabutter and how many milligrams of THC there will be per serving. These are estimates, but they are useful in determining how much cannabutter to use in a recipe. Try this edibles dosage calculator to calculate the potency of your cannabutter.

More Tips for Using Cannabutter

You can lower the potency of your infused baked goods by using a mix of uninfused butter and cannabutter in the recipe.

When portioning out cannabutter, divide the cannabutter vertically rather than scooping off the top. This is important because of how the THC settles in the butter. Vertical portions ensure more even THC distribution between portions.

When using in a baked good recipe, ensure the batter is well-mixed to distribute the butter as evenly as possible throughout the servings.
