Decarboxylation process – this is an essential step to activate the cannabinoids in the plant. Prepare the dried cannabis by grinding the flower to a consistent and small particle size, making the extraction process more efficient.
Extraction of terpenes and crude oil from the decarboxylated bud – terpenes are reintroduced later in the process. Extraction methods include supercritical CO2 extraction, solvent based methods (like ethanol) or solventless methods that use heat and pressure.
Winterization is where unwanted fats, waxes and lipids are removed from the extracted oil by dissolving the crude oil in ethanol and freezing it. This solidifies the impurities making it easy to filter them out.
Filtration and purification of the oil. After winterization, solidified fats and impurities including any solvents, are purged and filtered out making the cannabis extract as pure as possible before distillation.
Distillation is the final step where the cannabis oil is distilled by heating it to the boiling point of the desired cannabinoids like THC to isolate them for a clear, potent cannabis oil.

How are terpenes reintroduced to distillate?

Terpenes are what give cannabis its aromas and flavors, but they are sensitive to heat. This is why extraction technicians remove them using various extraction methods to keep them intact and then reintroduce them to preserve flavor and aroma. Follow a mixing method. There are various recommended methods, such gentle heating and stirring, for re-adding terpenes to distillate depending on the type of terpenes for optimal results.
Test and adjust the terpene concentration based on your preference. Just allow the mixture to cool before testing.
