How to Renew your Missouri Medical Marijuana Card
January 20, 2022

A new year has dawned on Missouri’s medical marijuana market, and for many patients, that means renewing their medical card. That’s why we’ve put together a guide to renewing your medical card. If you’re seeking a medical card for the first time, head over to our Patient Resources for step-by-step instructions.

When to Renew

Renewing early is the name of the game. Patient and Caregiver ID Cards contain a section at the bottom of the card that lists the license expiration date. There’s a 60-day window from that date in which to renew, but the first 30 days are the best time to complete all renewal paperwork.

Sixty days prior to the expiration date, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) sends a license renewal notification to the email address provided in the original medical card application. Renewal applications may be submitted to the registration system one day after receiving the reminder email. You will receive multiple email notifications to remind you to renew. The email reminders will automatically arrive at 60, 45, 30, and 15 days before the license expiration date, so watch your email. If you’ve already submitted your application and are still getting email reminders, don’t worry, they are sent automatically and your application is fine.

Submitting the application early is important to make sure there’s no interruption to getting your medicine. This is because DHSS has 30 days to process patient applications. If you send your application less than 30 days before the expiration date on your card, your renewal may not be approved before your card expires.

Renewing early won’t take time off your license. If the original application was approved on 7/1/2019, and has an expiration date of 7/1/2020, once the renewal application is processed and approved on 5/30/2020, the renewed license will have an expiration date of 7/1/2021.

What to Prepare

You know when to start the renewal process, now you need to know what to prepare. Much of this will be like what you prepared for the original license application.

Missouri Medical Marijuana Program Registry (MMMP) Log-in – Prepare by logging into the application portal, or MMMP Registry. Check your personal information like name, number, resident and mailing address and make any needed updates.

Physician Recertification – If you liked the physician who did your original certification, check back in with that doctor to schedule a renewal. If you are seeking a new physician, consider checking with your local dispensary to see if there are any upcoming patient drives nearby offering recertifications, or if they have any recommendations for a physician. While you cannot do the renewal at a dispensary, they are great resources for explaining the process. Schedule a recertification appointment to obtain a Physician Certification Form, which your physician will upload to the application portal on your behalf.

Paperwork – Additional documents you’ll need include a valid state or federal ID, proof of Missouri residency (valid Missouri Driver’s License, Missouri ID card, current Missouri motor vehicle registration, or recent Missouri utility bill), and a clear, color photo of yourself taken in the last 3 months. Smile for that selfie!

How to Send a Renewal Application

Log in to your MMMP Registry account at mo-public.mycomplia.com

Navigate to the License Dashboard to view your patient license. Use the horizontal scrollbar, if necessary, to view the Actions column.

Click the white circle with three green stacked horizontal lines inside for your patient license.

A menu will appear with several action options. Click “Patient Renewal” to proceed.

From here, the process is very similar to when you submitted your patient license application the first time. Follow each of the application steps provided by the portal, including updating any needed information and uploading relevant documents.

From there, keep an eye on your email for any notifications about your renewal being approved or issues with the application. Don’t be alarmed if you continue to receive reminders to renew, as those are automatic emails and don’t mean that there’s an issue with your application.

DHSS has a photo tutorial for navigating the portal, including a step-by-step tutorial for renewals on pages 14-17, just click here.
