How to Make Canna Sugar

You’ve heard of cannabutter, but have you tried making canna sugar? This sweet option is great for everything from baking and cooking to adding it to coffee or tea. We love using Cheers! Trim or Baker’s Batch XLs from Flora Farms to make our canna sugar. Let’s get right to it!

 

Canna Sugar

Makes 1 cup

Ingredients
3 grams – Dried cannabis
1 cup – Grain alcohol (will likely take less)
1 cup – White sugar

Equipment
Glass Jar
Cheesecloth or Reusable fine-mesh coffee strainer
Glass baking dish

 

Directions

Decarboxylation

Cannabis must be heated to activate compounds such as THC in a process known as decarboxylation.

Preheat oven to 245° F.

Line non-stick baking tray with parchment paper. Place cannabis in an even layer on tray and bake for 30-40 minutes. Lightly shake the tray every 10 minutes to evenly bake the cannabis.

Once baked, grind the cannabis coarsely with a hand grinder.

Tip: Pre-decarbed cannabis, like what’s left after dry herb vaporizing, also works for making edibles. It can taste somewhat more roasted than cannabis decarbed in the oven, making it a great match for canna sugar, which masks the stronger flavor better than oil/butter infusions.

 

Preparation

Place cannabis in jar. Pour in enough grain alcohol to cover cannabis, and close jar. Let sit 30 minutes, shake every 5 minutes.

Preheat oven to 200° F. Strain cannabis and grain alcohol through cheesecloth or coffee strainer into glass baking dish. Add sugar to strained liquid and stir well. Bake the dish and stir regularly until the alcohol evaporates, then remove from oven.

Allow sugar to cool, then break up any large pieces. Store in an airtight container.

More Tips for Using Canna Sugar

You are not limited to white sugar for this recipe. Several others work well, like brown sugar, cane sugar, coconut sugar, turbinado sugar, and monk fruit sweetener. Powdered artificial sweeteners and Splenda do not work well for this recipe.

You can easily lower the potency of your infused baked goods by using a mix of uninfused sugar and canna sugar in the recipe.

Pre-decarbed cannabis, like what’s left after dry herb vaporizing, also works for making edibles. It can taste more roasted than cannabis decarbed in the oven. This makes it a great match for canna sugar, which masks the strong flavor better than oil/butter infusions.

Always start with a low dose, like 5mg or under, when consuming edibles. Then wait 2-4 hours to feel the full effects before dosing again.
